CHAPTER TWELVE

HE KNOWS

Tara

“Tara,” the voice whispered.

Tara sat up in bed. Josh slept soundly beside her.

“Tara,” the voice called again.

She slipped out of bed, out of her room, and down the pitch-black hall. She couldn’t continue to ignore or run away from this. Whatever this was.

“Who are you?” Tara whispered.

“Follow me.”

Tara trailed behind the voice until she was in front of the garage door. She took a breath. Placing her hand on the cold knob, she turned it and opened the door. Darkness enveloped her. Her fingers fumbled to find the light switch. When she found it, she flicked it up.

The light went on, and she was in her parents’ basement. Her father stood there with a maniacal grin that morphed into a scowl.

“I know what you’re doing!” he said.

Tara closed her eyes tight and screamed, “You’re dead!”

“Tara, I’m alive.”

“No, no, no!” Tara screamed.

“Tara, you’re having a nightmare. I’m fine. You’re fine.” It was Josh’s voice now.

She opened her eyes, trying to adjust to the lamp’s light. Josh put his arm around her, gently pulling her to him. She rested her head on his chest, the beating of his heart comforting her.

“What was it about?” Josh asked.

“I don’t remember,” Tara said, though the image of her father’s crystal-blue eyes glaring at her was still clear in her mind.

“Want me to turn the light back off? It’s only two in the morning.”

Tara breathed in his comforting smell. “No. I just want to lie here with you like this.”
